Review: Only Lovers Left Alive

Vampires get a bad rap as far as their depiction in pop culture goes. They are portrayed as predators endlessly stalking humans to quench their thirst. In reality, they would much rather finish that song they have spent decades working on. Feeding on humans is a Fifteenth Century problem, with sources in medicine to sell them blood, vampires focus on other pursuits such as music and literature now.

Review: The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel begins with the titular establishment on the last legs of its former glory. Residents there are solitary and only nod at each other in passing. A particularly lonely man (F. 'Only Lovers Left Alive' Poster

Jim Jarmusch's latest film seems like a curio of sorts, featuring vampires in modern day Detroit, but given the acting talents of Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston, it could be one of the best features of 2014.

Jim Jarmusch's 'Only Lovers Left Alive'

Jim Jarmusch's upcoming vampire-love story finds Adam (Tom Hiddleston), a mysterious underground musician (who has lived for centuries) sunk in a depression due to the endless suffering in humanity. Trying to escape his existential funk, he reunites with long-term lover Eve (Swinton), but his hopes for romantic calm are spoiled by her wild younger sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska).

Only Lovers Left Alive received a great deal of its financing from last year's Cannes so there could be a first look at this year's festival. The cast (also including John Hurt and Anton Yelchin) and premise are extremely intriguing, let's keep those fingers crossed for a debut this year.

Review: Suffer the Little Darling (We Need to Talk About Kevin)

"Snail. Scary knot of desires. Hungry snarl. Small son. Why do I have to love you? How have you won?" - Anna Stevenson

Eva (Tilda Swinton) and Franklin (John C. Reilly) started out happily enough, free spirits wandering around in the rain. No cares and no worries about tomorrow. When Eva finds herself pregnant she has to give up her career and settle out in the suburbs. This is a woman who spends a majority of her pregnancy trying to find the rewind button. If a child can sense it's not wanted, then Kevin had a headstart on hating his mother.

Kevin, portrayed through the years, isn't always a monster. He begins as petulant toddler that soils himself on command, transitions to a savant of emotional blackmail and emerges from his cocoon as the sociopath played by Ezra Miller. If he manages to get parts after his turn as Kevin, I will be shocked. Few characters inspire as much hatred as this son of a well-to-do family.

That Kevin starts to look like Eva makes his acts …
