Putting Women in Their Place: Actresses Back in the Spotlight

When the average moviegoer is asked to name some of the greatest female characters, the first names that spring to mind are Ripley and Sarah Connor. Actresses were asked to do exciting things after the 1940s and 50s and films were littered with great female performances throughout the years that followed. Women like Ripley and Sarah were defined by their own motivations, anger, competitive edge, or beliefs. It was no longer a requirement for an actress to be in a romantic comedy for her to get a majority of the screen time.

Abruptly the clock struck midnight and those women returned to the waifish, arm-decorations that stood as the new standard for women in films. Women weren’t leading as many action films and dramas, instead they were relegated to the romantic comedies that they had tried so hard to escape from fifty years ago. Gone were the women who occupied films for reasons other than marrying a man. Gone were the women who kicked ass and took names. Gone were women who could le…

New Comic-Con Trailer for 'Catching Fire'

Lionsgate released a new trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire today at Comic-Con. If you thought the first trailer wasn't tense enough, you'll enjoy this one which also features a ton of new footage from the film.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire hits theaters on November 22nd.

It's All Been Done Before

Originality is often bemoaned to be lacking in modern cinema. Sequels and adaptations lie in waiting every weekend. Yet with all of the complaints about there not being anything new in film anymore, take faith that this is not a new problem. Hollywood has always put out movies that are a little too similar to other movies.

Familiar plots collide at least twice in any given year. In 2006 three films about magicians all saw the screen: The Prestige, The Illusionist and released to less fanfare, Scoop.

2013 is shaping up to repeat that again with The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Now You See Me. Prestidigitation just keeps popping up lately. If something as obscure as magic manages to appear that often how could any unused plots be mined out of Hollywood?

2012 Thus Far

As we draw nearer to the end of June and consequently the halfway point of the year, what better time to reflect upon some of the highlights of 2012 so far? The list is fairly commercial at this point, curse moving out of the city for summer! Not all of us were able to attend film festivals in Cannes or Sundance, so I cannot speak to what will deliver Oscars, but for moviegoer enjoyment you cannot look past these select films.

Prometheus(You say tomato, I saw good sci-fi/horror)
The Avengers(The Comic Books Gods delivered)
The Grey (A film that captures emotion, visual flourishes and an ace performance from Mr. Neeson)
John Carter(It may not have made a lot of money, but Andrew Stanton created the only real fantasy story of the year)
Haywire(A genre exercise filled with capable actors)
Cabin in the Woods(Horror with a genuine surprise and comic wit. Thanks again, Whedon!)
Hunger Games (Jennifer Lawrence shines again in the woods)
Seeking A Friend for the End of the World(Is its tone a little…

Review: Teenage Riot (The Hunger Games)

People have been pitted against one another in deadly combat forever. As long as civilizations have sought venues for entertainment, bloodsport has been there to satiate the need. The difference between Hunger Games and history is that children were never participants in the combative arena.

District 12 serves as a ghetto for children. They are represented by wealthy ambassadors that do not live there, the eldest take on parental duties, and on a regular basis they are required to fight each other to the death in a tournament. At the age of twelve children are required to enter a pool where the name selected shall serve as a contestant. At “The Reaping,” boys and girls are taken from each district and selected by age and the number of rations they accepted throughout the year. There, they are thrown into a controlled arena, only one child survives.

Primrose Everdeen is entering her name for the first time and her sister, Katniss, is insistent that she won't be selected. Katniss wa…

Listen to The Hunger Games Soundtrack

The soundtrack for one of this year's most hotly anticipated films came out today. After giving it a listen, without a doubt, "One Engine" by The Decemberists has to be my favorite track. Great song, I hope that it is actually included in the film instead of dubbing over the credits. The rest of the soundtrack includes bands Arcade Fire, The Civil Wars, Maroon 5 and Kid Cudi. Those interested in acquiring the album can hit up the link below.
